Best Training Methods/Options

Hi all I have an adorable male 9 week old GSD. I live in a developing country with no access to dog training classes. I need advice on the best methods to use to train my dog. I want him to be a companion, and also very protective since I am a single female living by myself. So, how can I train him without totally stifling his aggressive/protective traits? I do have the book "Good Owners, Great Dogs" by Brian Kilcommons. Is that good? Also, I hear a lot about having "work" for the to do. What kind of work can I give him? Thanks in advance!

Well you DEFINITELY want to make sure you socialize him with plenty of different people and places. You want to socialize him because it helps him learn not to be afraid and act aggressively in new situations, as well as teaches him what to look for as to who is right and who is bad news. Don't want that a loaded gun going off at the wrong times (so to speak).

As for training, there's tons of videos on youtube. Clicker training is effective and many dogs take to it quickly. Positive training as well. Clicker training is simply the sound of a click taking place of a "yes" when the dog does the correct action based on the desired command. A click marks faster than a verbal acknowledgement which works better for some people. It really just depends on you.

Check youtube for videos by Tab289. He has a GSD that is clicker trained and he's a very good trainer. You can learn a great deal from his videos as he gives great explanations and demonstrations.

there really isn't one Best training method. My dog doesn't really like treats so clicker/marker training didn't work. Thats not to say it doesn't for most dogs, the leerburg dvds are pretty awesome and way way in depth. Don Sullivan's method is pretty good. They way my GSD latched onto training is pretty much identical to his and really created a strong bond with my dog. Downside, she never wants to leave me alone.
