Hips, elbows, and proof of temperament and working ability by an unbiased third party, preferably in multiple venues or on multiple different occasions is what I personally aim for. Like Michelle said, lower level OB and Rally don't qualify as a test of the dogs character, IMO.
As far as sales go, as a first time breeder myself, all but one puppy in each of my first and second litters went to working homes of various disciplines. When you have a dog worthy of being bred that is being "campaigned" through the venues in which they are shown, people will come to you.
I don't think as many people should be turned away or scared of breeding as it is discussed here. If you are prepared to put the proper time, work and money into it, and are prepared to take responsibility for the puppies that are produced, I personally don't see the issue.
