I think I might have 2 SAR dogs :)

So Areli, my 38wk old GSD I know has the drive and potential. She hits scents hard (and you got be in good shape, lol) and is having a blast searching... But Akivah, my 43wk old gsd/malamute has a much more laid back, passive personality. He, like Areli, has learned to pick things up and bring them to me, etc.. But my concern has been how he would handle the time while Areli is in training.. What I could do to let him reach his potential and be important in his own way... Well, today, I was working with Areli a dog Akivah seemed to be begging to try... So, I had my helper lay a semi easy (he couldn't see her leave, know any direction of where she was, and about 75yards away behind a tree) yet hard for a newbie trail. I gave him the scent article scent and he dropped his nose and steadily traced her path! He was so pleased with himself!! And I was a proud mama! So I took him back to home base and had my helper lay a more difficult trail. She had out of sight and in a barn (open) behind a trash can. The scent path had been crossed a couple of times, and Akivah had two points where he looked confused. I just wanted, gave him the scent again and he took it back up and found her! I had to rely on him both times as I had no idea where she was (had told her to listen if I asked for a sound to be made to help him if necessary).. He was easy to read and very steady So I may have 2 dogs doing SAR! Still have a lot of testing to see if it is something he likes and if he really has the potential, but I was surprised and super pleased!!

I think that is cool! Very exciting I hope it works out, because than you can give equal amounts of time and energy to each dog without so much time/effort on your part sounds like this could be good for all parties involved

Thanks Lobo Dog I was excited as I have been worried he might 'disappear' inside.. He is very easy going and Areli is in your face pushy. Knowing he might have the talent and desire makes it easier in some ways (waaay more work training, lol) but definitely eases my mind. He was so happy . Areli is so confident and stubborn on the scent (at least so far) that I know she is enjoying herself. Now I am happy to see he might too

Congratulations! I remember how excited I was when Skadi picked up on tracking. She didn't get it at first.

My first Shepherd Lishka was like that... When she finally got the game she was so excited... Areli has it naturally, but I bought her with this in mind (her mom and dad are certified SAR in Idaho). Akivah though is such a goofball, trying to figure out what he might want to do (and I knew he wanted to do something) has been tough. I never really thought he would like scenting... Obviously I was wrong, lol! We will see how quickly he takes to it...
