I am so blown away by this puppy

Ok ok A good dog is a good dog but we had done zero scent work in about a month because I have been focusing on obedience control (not taking the word control lightly here-he is a wild child) and agility (foot placement, stability excercises etc.) and had missed team trainings for an obedience class...and it is freaking hot now.

Anyway - 90F last night. Two completely unknown problems (both wound up hanging and he had only worked a handful of those in the past) busy park with a ball game going on and we were at the woodline going in. He got straight to work, found both of them and gave his trained indication as close to source as he could get. Ignored a squeaky toy ball that we found, too.

I know its not a lot, and really not anymore than any other good dog, but when the stars in the universe align and you realize this handful of a puppy that has tried your patience to NO end (at class, he was politely dubbed as, uh, enthusiastic, wide open, etc.--fortunately zero temperament issues, just energetic) can really focus and remembers the job after a month...it just pumps you up.

Gearing up - the Master Trainer we train with some is going for his Cadaver credentials and he is going to work one on one with me and another teammate becuase he has to teach so many people for his own credentials.....and I really like this person; he is just great and has years of experience. So he can't certify us but a lot of good one on one coming up.

The goal is to test the NAPWDA Cadaver Test in late September (he will be 14 months) -- not holding out too much for that-we have only had him on a boat one time-but I am mainly going for the week long seminar. My official goal is January-closer to 18 months with a little more maturity on him. He is still too much of a puppy to actually be deployable right now. I think. He just keeps blowing me away.

That's awesome

It's stories like this that really make me scoff at people that make comments like, "it's just a dog" Dogs are much smarter then the average person gives them credit for

She is Kathy Holbert in West Virginia.

She does not breed a whole lot, and has more of a reputation for her Beacerons and a good bit of working dog experience, (past LE, LETS evaluator, Cadaver dog handler in Afghanistan)--She is very good folks and straight forward. Her own dogs have working certs but not schutzhund titles so far, but she does look for those if she breeds out and her experience is on the streets so I count it for something in terms of evaluating what she is looking for.

I gather she is more into raising them up, picking her stock and selling green dogs than puppies though.

She does seem to know the lines ... actually her dog Kaso was the one who sired the famous Lark V Sontausen, so she goes back with Julia Priest.

Her goal is to produce dogs for police service and SAR disciplines. Her web page is not so up to date. I met her at a cadaver dog seminar, really liked her.

When it comes together you really appreciate it because you can succeed with much less but then it is all just so natural for him. And he loves it so much.
