Training the trainer :-) Tracking related

I've been working on a problem with my dog in tracking. When she stops at the corner and figures out the next leg, she will start to speed up down the leg. Part of the problem is that as the leash is slack at the corner and as she takes off in a lateral direction, I can't really hold her back without pulling her off the track.

I finally realized this morning that it was ME causing the problem. Duh! As soon as she works out the corner I usually say "good girl", I hadn't realized until today that it was my praise in combination with her nose that was double confirming the track for her and at that point she would speed up.

On the next 2 corners I waited until I was fully around the corner and on the next leg (with taut leash) before praising her. Without the praise, she continues scenting the track at her normal pace. Once I'm straight behind her on the leg I could add the praise and control her pace with the leash.

It was one of those little lightbulb moments that you wonder why you hadn't thought of it before and one of the reasons I love the challenge of tracking.

I was talking about "teaching tracking" with a non dog person the other day. I was trying to explain how you can't teach a dog to train, at the most you can guide the learning process, but for the most part we are deaf persons trying to teach someone to dance.
