Non-IPO specific tracking classes?

Our IPO classes happen in two parts (Obedience, Protection one day and Tracking another) very far from home, but there is a tracking club closer to us. Does training for tracking (TD) have to be geared in a certain way for IPO, or could I use the tracking club around here for convenient training closer to home?

In general, you can get a TD on a dog trained for IPO, but not the other way around. IPO tracking is footstep to footstep and the dog should keep his nose deep into the track the whole time. TD tracking allows for airscenting and a much less exact track.

If you want to do IPO, do not join the tracking club unless they are willing to lay tracks for you and you do the track IPO style.

Ah I didnt realize that. I've never done either, and the way you explain it makes sense so thanks a lot! I'm sure you've saved me a lot of trouble.
