Too old?

I have a male GSD that is almost 17 months old. Is this too late to at least begin to work towards getting a BH? I am looking for something for just the two of us to do together and I have found a club near me that has many great trial dogs but also allows general training.

I have contacted the club and will be going out on Tuesday for them to see him, I just want to know your all opinions of what I will be walking in to. If it is somewhat "normal" to see dogs starting out that are a little older?

Re: Too old?

No, it is NOT "too late".

Absolutely!!! (To the question about dogs starting out that are a "little older". 17 months really isn't "older" anyway.)

I say GO FOR IT, and have FUN!

Re: Too old?

I got a BH on a 7 year old dog. I know someone who is working towards their SchH1 on an 8 year old dog. It's not the age of the dog that determines how the dog does...it's the dog and you! And truly 17 months isn't that old.

In general, don't expect it to run like a standard group obedience class. At most SchH clubs I've seen it's one or two dogs out at a time and the other dogs are up in their crates in their cars. There is very little or no dog to dog interaction and really very little people dog interaction unless it's a puppy being socialized or something someone is working on. There is a usually a heavy focus on work at the clubs I've been to.

Pay attention to what the more experienced people are doing! It'll give you a lot of insight into the process of training and Have fun!!

Re: Too old?

Nope, not too old. My first schutzhund was 2.5 before she started bitework.

Re: Too old?

My girl Neke got her BH when she was about 6-7.

I'm tempted to try Tazer (my Cocker) next year and he's 11!!

Re: Too old?

Wonderful! Thank you so much!

I would love to be able to trial if he has what it takes and I have what it takes, but as mentioned before at least want to get a BH. I hadn't had as free of a schedule in the past as I will now so I am hoping for good things to come with a lot of work on my part.
