Old dog new tricks?
I have a wonderful male GSD 2 1/2 years old. His general obedience is supurb. I have been told that his early tracking inante ability by many is a God given gift. His bite work is, frankly, poor. This is in part my frault in early tug training, and I also beleive the fault of his trainer who was very hard on him at an early age (8-12) months. He freezes into avoidance with males wearing sleeves, and he doesn't do this just if he and I play.
Here is my question? Based on the above facts and his fanatic ball drive-he'd take the ball over food- Can I start from the beginning, or at least an earlier place, and maybe catch up? I am 61 years old , and have bad knees that impeed my activities somewhat. I have capable trainers, and people that I work with. My goal in Schutzhund is an activity that he and I will enjoy, and I'm not looking for anything more than titling him with local clubs. The trainer that is willing to help me says that he easily could help us obtain a reach a BH, hopefully by the fall , and wants to go on. His former trainer was ofter what I consider brutal at times driving him to avoidance at times and took the fun out of tug(bite) as I had called it . I could go on, but any feedback?
