How important is it to you?

When looking to buy an adult titled dog, do you find out about litter mates first? How important is it to you what litter mates are doing? What leves of competition they have reached?

We have already found 3 of Tara's litter mates (2 brothers, 1 sister) all three of them are SchH 3s.

Some months ago, it is something I would have not thought about, but know, I see how important it is. I'm still learning.

Re: How important is it to you?

We don't typically buy titled dogs, as we prefer to make our own, but we did do it once and in that case, since she was for breeding, gathering info on her littermates and previous progeny was an important part of the process.

If I were just to buy a dog for competition, with no thoughts to breeding, I wouldn't put as much emphasis on studying relatives beyond basic health issues (to provide insight on whether the dog I was interested in may develop any in the future). I'd be most concerned with the dog itself. If buying for breeding, both the dog itself and it's relatives would be given pretty much equal weight in the decision.

It is very important. Saying that I have a first time breeding puppy but booth parents are machines when working and have had previous litters that threw very nice working dogs. I did not even think twice when I was able to get a puppy from this breeding.

OOPS, you said "adult titled". I would still like to know what the littermates where doing as far as tempermant, drives and workablility.

Re: How important is it to you?

For breeding I would want to know about the sire, dam, littermates and 1/2 siblings. Also the production of the sire, dam, grandparents, etc.

For competition I would only really care about the dog itself and maybe the working life and health of the parents and grandparents.

Very interesting. I think it is always nice to know siblings are doing well. In fact, I just got an email from one of Tara sibling's owner who trialed him yesterday and got 100 in tracking, 93 in obedience, and 95 in protection!! I know for a fact that Tara is an excellent tracker too, she got 100 on her SchH1 so it must run in the family.
