Bravo Update

Bravo is still hanging in there and seems to be as happy as can be. I have put all further rescue efforts on hold after making the decision to no longer vaccinate Bravo. It is risky but it also seems to be recommended to prevent accelerating the DM. I have stopped visiting animal shelters and won't bring any unquarantined dogs into my home. I hope I am doing the right thing for my big guy. I will never forgive myself if he gets a vaccination-preventable disease. Anyone have thoughts on what I am doing???

I have still been unable to download his winter pictures. Guess I'm going to have to break down and take the camera in to be looked at.

Re: Bravo Update

Kerry,
Thanks for the update. I don't have any input having never had a dog with DM, but following your heart rarely steers you wrong.

Re: Bravo Update

So glad to hear the big guy is doing well! I haven't vaccinated Max for nearly 2 years (he got a 3 year rabies vaccine at that time). He's 11 and I won't vaccinate again. Here's a good thread regarding vaccinations:

Re: Bravo Update

Kerry, you can do titers instead of just guessing. I do titers with my own dogs instead of vaccines.

Re: Bravo Update

The vet draws blood and the lab tests for the presence of resistance for certain diseases (I believe they measure the presence of antibodies but I am not really sure of the details). The test tells if the dog has adequate resistance or not.
If the resistance is not adequate you can revaccinate. My dogs were fine and did not need vaccines. It is more expensive to test than to vaccinate, but I am sure I save on vet bills on the long run.

Cila, I have done titers before but since I don't want to vaccinate Bravo, no matter what the titers say, I don't think there's any need for running them.
According to Bravo's vet records, Customs vaccinated him religiously every year and the only time he missed one was when the idiot in KY had him. I had him vaccinated in 2004 and 2005 so hopefully he will be ok. Thanks a bunch for the suggestion, though.

Re: Bravo Update

This just takes the cake...
I have Bravo on my petfinder to encourage adopters to consider a senior but it plainly says that Bravo is NOT available for adoption.
A lady emailed me and wanted to adopt Bravo because her son is on drugs and she wanted Bravo to help keep the kid in line, search his room, etc. She needs a whole lot more than a retired narcotics dog!

Re: Bravo Update

I agree Kerry,
It sure takes all kinds don't it? LOL! Though I would be a bit proud someone wanted to adopt him, but really, that mom does need more than a retired NARC dog.
