Updated: Ranger from ny to ontario
Ranger, my long hair, beautiful GSD, came to me from New Amsterdam, NY, (to Ontario) three and a half years ago via Kathy who was posting here. He was four and a handful. He had lived his life in an atmosphere where he was abused and neglected and, consequently, distrusting.
In those three years that he lived with me and my other GSD, Creena, he instantly became my Velcro dog and was always at my side. He learned to trust me as much as he could, but he never totally got over the years of abuse. As a result, I was bitten many times, but I was never afraid of him. I never saw him as aggressive, just scared. I knew that he tried his hardest, and I loved Ranger and believed that he was where he was supposed to be (he also never broke the skin!).
We had three years together where I watched this beautiful, smart, loving boy do the very best that he could and I admired and loved him for it. Two months ago, while he looked to be in perfect health and had just eaten a whole lot of broccoli, he dropped on my kitchen floor and died within 20 minutes. I saw the light go out in those beautiful dark brown eyes and while he lay here dying, I told him that I loved him and that I was so glad that we found each other. An autopsy later that night showed that he died from cancer of the sac around his heart, which had spread to his spleen. He was only 7 - much too young.
When Ranger spent time with me in my office, lying on the floor where he had his chin on my foot, he would look at me at me as if to say "Do you know how amazing I think you are?" Well, I don't know about that, but I know how amazing Ranger (Derwood Kirby) was.
Rescued GSDs are wonderful and deserve a second chance.
I've posted pictures of Ranger, who is the bigger of the two GSDs, and his sidekick and partner in crime, Creena.
May the first pair of brown eyes that I see at the bridge be yours my sweet Seamus.
