M B/T 8 YRS Rockville, MD-Bobby #115

I recieved an email from Pam asking for help for this boy. The shelter is overfull, with two to three dogs to a kennel, this boy is urgent and needs help immediately. He is a beautiful guy!! Per Pams eval:

Bobby #115

I just don't know what to say about Bobby. He was fine with me and Evan and Jeff, but he needs a careful foster and adoptive home. You must be slow and deliberate and let him see you first. He is friendly, but distant. He didn't care to eat the treats or play with the ball. He walks nice on a leash. He has cataracts, his is in-tact, he is 8 years old, he has had a lonely life in a crate on the porch all day.
His shelter paperwork looks bad. Most kennel staff is bad with him. They move too quickly. The one guy approached him from the rear and went to pick him up by his hind quarters and the dog startled and snapped (duh). Well, now his paperwork says unpredictable and under-socialized. He let me touch him all over and up and down his legs. I was slow and deliberate. My 12 yr old son was petting him and could walk him around the shelter yard just fine.

115 - ID#A263958

I am an unaltered male, black and tan German Shepherd Dog.

The shelter staff think I am about 8 years old.

I have been at the shelter since Nov 25, 2009.
This information is 1 hour old.

Poor boy. Couldn't he have vision problems due to the cataracts? Seems that might be the reason for his differing reactions to the way different people approach him. I hope someone can help him.

Hi brt!! Its been awhile since I've been on here-I come back feeling a bit older from the stress of the past year lol. I hope as well that someone can help him out- he is such a handsome guy and I have such a huge soft spot for the MD dogs!

I'd love to pick him up but already have two 8 year old males in the house, one more would push the Alpha tension over the top. Are we sure he has cataracts? I know the surgery is around 1200 or so per eye and Seth A. Koch, VMD is local and one of the top dog opthamologists in the states if not the world.

This boy is stunning. He just takes my breath away, he is so beautiful. As others have mentioned, its likely his snapping is due to being in a strange envoirment and not being able to see.

He is probably just stressed out at the shelter, no wonder. That shelter is very busy and noisy. There is a good chance that he will be fine once he is out of there. Some cataracts are not unusual at that age, but I would attribute his behavior to shelter stress.
