First Impressions

Lainey and her new five year old brother are getting along well. At first Lainey was a little protective of me, but once she got the okay from me, she lightened up. He was great in the car and while not overly fond of the crate will stay in it. There was a test run while I went to get him a new collar. They are both pooped between the stress of meeting each other, playing in the yard, and Booker still recovering from his pneumonia and neutering. He doesn't seem to like being confined in the fenced in yard and looks for an escape route. I won't leave him outside alone. Tonight will be the real test while I sleep upstairs and they sleep down. I'm glad his orthopedic bed is coming because he is a little stiff in the hips. The foster said he was a fussy eater so I put out two cans of Merrick (which they took turns eating out of the same dish) and hand fed them pot roast while they were in their crates. Any suggestions about marking?

Re: First Impressions

Glad to hear that things are going so well! I hope you'll be posting pictures soon!

Is he marking in the house? If so, I would keep him on a leash. I had a foster who did that but he learned pretty quickly that I didn't like it and stopped. I would just say, "Eh,eh" and take him outside.

Re: First Impressions

Congratulations on your new family member, Kim. Now you can update your signature to include Booker.

Are you referring to him "marking his territory"? Hopefully he's not doing it in the house, but with him being 5 and just recently being neutured, you have to realize that his urge to mark is already a strong, instinctual habit for him, but it can be overcome with patience and positive correction (my male beagle used to love pee'ing in the house but hasn't done it in over 6 years.. it did take a few weeks though.) Being neutured was the first step, but it will take some time for the marking urge to decrease as the testosterone diminishes in his body, but even after being neutured it might not go away completely. Biggest advice is to stay positive and consistent and allow him plenty of time to do his business outside. It may be that he was just excited about his new crib and thought he would christen it well and might not ever do it again (hopefully.) If he does continue marking in the house, make sure to clean it immediately with an enzyme cleaner or he'll be more likely to do it again just because of the scent. Nature's Miracle is pretty expensive... I found that Zep brand "Pet Spotter" from Home Depot is just as good and alot cheaper. Clear vinegar will also work well.
Chances are that you giving him lots of praise for doing his business outside will reinforce his desire to please you and he'll figure out that the kitchen table really isn't all that much fun to pee on.

Congratulations again and good luck. I hope your first night with him goes well.

Re: First Impressions

I may not be keeping Booker. It turns out he is too much dog for me and my yard and life isn't enough for him. He is used to spending alot of time outdoors which he can't do at my house with my work schedule. Also, he is used to miles of exercise which he can't get in my third of an acre yard. The first two nights he was good about the crate, but today he fought me every time I had to put him back in. (Before work, lunch time, after work to get dinner ready). I have had back and neck surgery in the past and didn't consider I may have to physically force a dog into a crate. I can't. I have an open first floor and no place to put him other than the crate. Since I'm by myself, I'm stuck. I can't leave him outside. So I am looking into returning him. I won't even take any money back for him because I failed him. This was my first rescue and now I know an owner -surrender dog is best for me so I know exactly what the dog needs and I can be sure I can meet them. My dog has never roamed free and is used to her life and small yard. I can't walk him on my main street because he is terrified of cars. He freaked today when I tried. I feel terrible but know he has been treated well here and maybe someone with fields to roam can give him the space he needs.
