Going number 2 in the kennel at night

Hi All, Iím new here and desperate. I have 6 month old GSD who was doing amazing with pretty much everything. About 2 weeks ago we had to go out of town and have him in boarding for 4 days. Ever since we got back he has been going number two in his kennel during the night. I just canít get the timing right as to when he does it. I try to beat him to eat nightly, but when I get up he has already done it and is just relaxing in his kennel. He doesnít seem at all bothered by the fact that he has pooped in his den. I havenít been walking him at night before bed, but that wasnít the issue before either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as Iím at my wits end.

That sounds frustrating. I hope you figure it out.

How big is his kennel? If he has room to sleep on one end and defecate in the other, blocking off a portion of the crate or getting a smaller one may help. I would probably take him outside for a while right before bedtime and try to get him to go #2. I'm a bit of a night owl, so I would try to take him outside around midnight too, if possible.

Is it a firm stool or runny?--only asking because if this is a new behavior, you'll want to rule out any health issues that might be making it hard for him to hold it.

It is actually firm. I donít know if Iím maybe feeding him too late. So yesterday I fed him at 6, and since it was nice out we were out in the backyard for a while and he stayed out until 8. Took him out at 10:30 pm and he still went in his kennel. I have no idea what to do. My next step is to take him to the vet.

He stayed out til 8 in the backyard but did he poop there while you were out with him?
If I feed my pup at 6PM, I or my husband will usually walk him at least 2x before bed at 11P, and he will usually poop both times. He is 11 weeks.
