Ultrasound count vs actual litter size

I know that ultrasounds are inaccurate to predict litter sizes, but I was wondering what your experiences have been with ultrasound counts versus the actual litter size that was born. One breeder I spoke with has 6 on the image, but only 4 were born. My current breeder sees 2, bur obviously we don't know yet how many there actually are in her.

Thought this would be fun to see what people have experienced.

Accuracy depends on the skill of the person doing the ultrasound. We use an excellent reproductive specialist vet and he has never been off by more than 1. In those cases where he was off by 1, we always ended up with one less than expected, never more than expected. Since ultrasounds are typically done pretty early (we do them at 25 days) it is always possible for embryos to be reabsorbed, resulting in fewer puppies than were present at the ultrasound. Sometimes a good vet can even see that. We had a litter where there were 6 on the ultrasound, but he said 4 looked like they may be reabsorbing and told us that we may only end up with 2 (and recommended an x-ray closer to delivery date to confirm). Sure enough, those 4 did reabsorb and we only had 2 pups.

The one time we used a regular vet to do an ultrasound she told us to expect 3-4. We had 11. So needless to say we'll continue to go to the repro guy.

LOL On the 3-4 becoming 11.

I have had 5-6 become 8 when doing x-rays.
