Smile Pregnant Mama Dog XRays

Hello All,
I was wondering how many of you typically get the xray at 52 days to see how many pups are in Mama Dog's tummy? I am waiting to hear back from my vet but I have been told that it's great to get it done for peace of mind so you know exactly how many pups are coming and I have also bee told that the xray isn't full proof and on big litters some may hide so it isn't really peace of mind. What has been your experience with this?
The reason that I am thinking of having it ( the xray) is that last year was my Dam's first litter and she didn't start showing until the last week of pregnancy. This time, she started showing way early on. She is due on the 15th and she is huge already. I just want to be sure that I do everything right. Thanks to all for any input, advise, experience you can share!
Best,
A

I have x-rayed with some and not with others. I usually do it around 57 days.

We always do an ultrasound around 25 days. The vet we use for this is excellent at giving us an accurate count of puppies via ultrasound, so we don't bother to x-ray later. If we didn't do an ultrasound, or didn't have someone who was this accurate with the ultrasound, we'd x-ray. I do like having a count of how many puppies to expect. Though neither method is going to be exact and it is always possible to miss one or two.

Thank you for your posts. I appreciate it. I think I will go ahead and have the xray done. She is at day 48 today so, I will have it done about a week from today. She did great last year, but I guess I am more worried this year, because she is so much bigger and showed so much earlier. I'm wondering if that is an indication of a bigger litter this time?

Does anybody here use a child's nose asperator to suck out the pup's mouths or any other special precautions? Or just let Mama do her thing naturally?

Last time, after she had the first one, I kind of dried him off and tried to keep him warm while she was delivering #2 and so on like that until she was done so she could just focus on the task at hand.

I never used a portable heater, but I was recently told the temp should be at 82 to keep the pups warm.

Again, I know that some of you on here are very experienced breeders and I was just wondering what your normal procedures are.
