Interesting question

Here's the setup:

Mary is a pure bred German Shepherd.

Paul is a pure bred German Shepherd.

Mary was bred to Paul and had 8 puppies. One of the 8 puppies looked just like Peter - the intact Collie that lives with Jane. So it is believed that Peter AND Paul had access to Mary.

Now, those other 7 puppies that look JUST like GSDs - can you say they are full blooded GSDs?

I say no. I say you cannot tell (just by looks) which pups came from which sires.

Am I right or wrong? Could an egg from Mary have been fertilized by a sperm from Peter and the puppy came out looking exactly like Mary?

Re: Interesting question

Multiple sires are not uncommon. One could be sired by the collie and be a mixed pup. The other 7 could be pure GSD. AKC even has a multi-sire DNA based form for this situation.

Re: Interesting question

I think one would need to DNA the pups. I have seen mixes that looked a lot like one parent.

In all seriousness now, it is possible for the ones to look like GSDs to be PB GSD, or to be GSD/Collie crosses. You really can't tell for certain which is which, especially with pups. The one that looks like a Collie mix no doubt is a Collie mix, but the ones that look like GSDs may be GSDs, or may be mixes that take after Mary. The only way to know for sure would be to DNA Paul and the pups, to determine which pups are his, and thus PB, and the pups that aren't his then would be Peter's.

Re: Interesting question

Here's a questions along the same lines.

In the above scenario, if the pup's were DNA'd would the AKC register the part of the litter that was from the GSD sire?

I think you would have to do DNA to be sure.

Sure, the AKC is pretty much an honor system when it comes to writing down which dog parented which pup. You could probably register the one that looks like a collie and get away with it.

This reminds of: If Sue was married to Bob, and Bob's sister is married to Lou but Lou's grandmother is Sue's sister, how are Lou and Sue related?

Bad, bad memories. LOL! And the blowing in the wind answer cracked me up.

But I would figure that only a DNA test woud prove conclusively who the father was. It's like a Maury Povich episode of "Who's the Daddy?"

Re: Interesting question

I don't know the answer for certain, but I bet the pups with proven DNA could register.
