Questions about Personal Protection/Police Training

We have a ten week old GSD we are looking to get trained for level one protection (I realize that it different trainers call it different things). I was told some things that are making us rethink and I was wondering if anybody with trained police dogs or protection dogs could answer from experience.

Does the training change the dog's playful persona after this kind training? (ie. playfulness, fetch, etc..) I was told that they always seem to be "working" even if they are playing.

Did you have to keep your dog from socializing with men at all times after the training for an extended period of time? I was told we needed to crate her or put her in another room if a male figure other than family entered our house or property to keep the drive alive.

Also not spaying her until age 2-3 to ensure full maturity.

You have gotten bad information. Please don't let these people train your dog.

Most dogs are not genetically equipped for protection training. How old is your dog? She needs to be evaluated by an expert.

Have you talked to your homeowners insurance company? Are you willing to make rigorous obedience training a way of life?

Consider protection sport training instead, such as IPO. There is also

Service Dogs of America they meet in a club setting and train personal protection. Check and see if there is a club in your area.

There are a lot of disreputable people claiming to be protection trainers who will take your money and ruin your dog.

Your first step is to find a *reputable* trainer for an evaluation. Post your location and we'll see if we can help you in your search.
