Training

I am new to the forum, and new to the breed, and I am VERY pleased I stumbled upon this site.

I have several questions about training. I have my first GSD puppy, and he is just over 9wks old.

I am hoping to use him for personal/family protection, but i have NO idea where to start looking (in west central IL), who to ask, how he can be evaluated, and so on.

Could I get a little direction please?

Hopefully, someone will refer you to someone in that area, instead of question your bona fides or motives. I'm sure if you are referred to a good evaluator you will receive additional information on your pup and yourself.

Hey Rider, something you're going to read over and over on this and other forums is that there's a huge difference between sport and real protection. Get out and see as much actual training as you can. Its very difficult to find someone I would trust doing just personal protection stuff.

In a sport venue, I think its a lot better odds you can find someone to help you. You can verify their accomplishments, there's something you can see.

With personal protection, the main thing I worry about is someone just making your dog a suspicious mess that isnt going to do what you think he is.

I'm not sure how close you are to these guys, but they might be worth a look. I've never worked with them so I can't speak for their methods, but I have met Jonathan and he is a PSA judge so...

Steve makes a very good point. I have seen the results of "protection" trainers.

The Chicago Canine Company/Johnathan may be a bit of a drive, but they might be able to give you some good options more in your area.
