"Meet K-9 Dozer. We need your help finding him a Furever Home. Please read the statement below from Project K-9 Hero.

Project K-9 Hero is helping the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department find a forever home for retired Police K-9 “Dozer”.

Dozer was born on February 21st, 2011 and he retired from service as Dual Purpose Patrol/Narcotics K-9 on July 13th, 2017. Since then the LMPD has had difficulty in locating a qualified person or family to care for Dozer in retirement.

K-9 Dozer has multiple special needs and is currently suffering from degenerative eye disease. This mostly effects his night and peripheral vision. Since his retirement, he has been able to see fine in well lit areas and his condition has not deteriorated over the past year.

K-9 Dozer has displayed separation anxiety, which can cause some property damage at the house when left alone for long periods of time, especially in the dark.

K-9 Dozer has been able to socialize with other dogs prior, but also has had a few dogs he did not like. It would preferable that he goes to a home that does not have other animals to avoid any conflicts.

Once a qualified applicant is determined capable of adopting K-9 Dozer, they would need to sign a release from the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department and a contract saying if they can not handle him he must be returned to the LMPD.

Recommended person to adopt K-9 Dozer must:

Have extensive experience with handling or owning a Working K-9 (Malinois or Shepherd).

Preferable to have no young children in their home. Teenage or older would be manageable.

Willing to travel to Louisville, Kentucky to meet K-9 Dozer and go through a socialization process with the LMPD K-9 Unit.

Understand that he is a crated dog and needs to be crated when not with the handler.

If you are interested in giving K-9 Dozer a forever home and you meet each of these requirements please email us a detailed response on how you meet each qualifications by visiting www.projectk9hero.org and clicking on the “contact us” link.

Please note only fully qualified applicants may receive a response from our Project K-9 Hero Staff or the LMPD K-9 Unit directly.

Feel free to share this post and help us find a forever home for K-9 Dozer!

Respectfully,

Jason Johnson

Kudos to Louisville PD for doing this carefully and responsibly and not just offering the dog up for public auction as "excess equipment" (as some other departments I know have done with old K9s with medical needs).
