Afghanistan’s dogs of war sniff out mines

I have mixed feelings about using dogs for this purpose and the breeding etc. in Kabul but thought it was of interest.

msnbc.com has this as the featured story right now on their website.

Military, U.S. and other countries have trained dogs for mine detection for years. It's a noble task for our 4-footed companions.

The US Army first trained and used mine dogs in World War II. They didn't do so well because they tried using them while under enemy fire, but once they went from that to using the dogs for clearing minefields and finding booby traps, the program worked out quite well.

I believe most countries that have a military use mine dogs nowadays, especially in areas that are heavily mined. UN de-mining operations also use dogs for this purpose.

I understand; it is just that in the video the dogs were so beautiful and the puppies so cute. I hope they are being treated well and would like to know what happens when they are retired at 9 years.

I can only speak from personal experience. When you are willing to bet your life on a dog, you treat them pretty darn good. I don't know what happens when they retire. I hope they get a good home to live out what life they have left.
