If I leave a pound of gold on my front step, it is my pound of gold, not someone else's to take.
That's right but don't be shocked or surprised if you come home after a day away and your gold is gone!

The topic originally was that someone's pup had been stolen. It was not "how to prevent this" or "how the owner was at fault" -- it was a pup had been stolen. Sympathy to the pup & the owner from me.

You can avoid things being stolen if you never have things or have things that no one else wants, no-misguided person decides to take them just for malice etc.

In the past I've had people break into my beat up car repeatedly & go through the glove box . I got tired of replacing windows so left the door unlock. I inadvertently discovered that an 8 pack of tampons in the glove box detered the theif. In other cases, I've mistakenly left my purse in an unlocked car and found it left alone. Luck and circumstance.

And I thought forums were so we can have a conversation.

I can just see a forum where only the original topic were discussed.

OP: We have a German Shepherd. He is black and tan.

Poster1: Yup. Black and tan.
Poster2: Yes. Black and tan.
Poster3: Aha.Black and tan.
Poster4: Yeppers. Black and tan.
Poster5: Jawohl. Black and tan.
Etc...

It's a washed out black and tan with a bitch stripe, but some people are going to tell you he's a patterned sable. Don't believe them.

Yes, on a forum we go out on tangents, but there in an almost imperceptible line between blaming the victim and encouraging others to be more safety minded.

I mean, I could say, "my dog got struck by lightning."

And one would expect at least some people to say, gee that's awful, I'm sorry. Instead, everyone is just saying, "well if you take your dog outside, it could get struck by lightning, what kind of an idiot takes their dog outside?"

Thank you. This was my point. There is a difference in being prepared and conscience of possible outcomes and saying someone was inviting trouble.

Sorry I detailed things with my tangent. But it is a sore spot to interpret what people said as "the owner should know better than to tempt criminals". I just really hate that. I have been lucky in my life. Never have been victim of a major crime (bike stolen is about it). But, while I understand and follow rules of personal safety, a failure on my part does not mean I am culpable or partially responsible for the person committing the crime.

leaving a pot of gold on your front step...you're inviting trouble. or gold pot. either way, lolol...

and isn't interpreting pro active as tempting criminals and/or victim blaming kind of a stretch?

if your dog got struck by lightening, most people would say, "oh, no what a terrible accident"...not a comparison of equivalents.

I think my dogs are more likely to get struck by lightning than stolen by thieves.

House fire in Euclid today, dog rescue of sorts. They got 16 dogs out. 1 dog and a cat died. Sad.

My dogs are far more likely to die from a fire at my home, than being struck by lightning in their kennels, or being stolen by thieves. Especially when I am miles from the fire station and it's a volunteer department.

They're better off outside when I am not home. And yes, I take exception to blaming the dog owner for what happened to the dog. Just because in some places people will steal anything that isn't nailed down, doesn't mean we should nail down our dogs. Siding against the dog owner, is siding with, making excuses for, being in the mindset of the criminals. By suggesting that people should keep their dogs inside when they are gone, we are encouraging sympathy away from the dog owners, which is blaming the victim. I am pretty shocked that so many people are in sympathy with the thieves -- that is mind-boggling to me.
