How do I teach my GSD to stop marking in the house?

I am new to this forum and desperately trying to tap into the wealth of wisdom on this site. My husband and I have a beautiful 4 yr old GSD. We both work during the day so Gunner is alone for 8 hours most days. This is not a new situation for him. We have had him since he was 6 weeks old and have had the same work routine. However, in the last 6 months he has started marking the furniture. We have a doggy door so getting outside isn't the issue. We have tried putting him in a kennel but he gets extremely upset and causes harm to himself trying to get out. I've read he may be suffering from seperation anxiety but don't understand why it started all of the sudden. He only urinates when we are not home so we can't catch him in the act. Any input would be appreciated.

When I moved to a house where there had previously been dogs, and where my tenant now had 2 male dogs in her basement apartment, my male, who had been perfectly housebroken in our previous house, began marking the furniture, etc.

He would wait until I was out of the house to do it. Then, one day, I caught him in the act, and let him know in no uncertain terms that I was NOT HAPPY! (Yelled at him.)

Never Happened Again!

I know it's hard, but the key to success is vigilance. Tie his leash around your waist, or crate him when you can't keep an eye on him. You MUST LIMIT HIS FREEDOM in order to cure this! You cannot fix this if he has the freedom of the house while you are at work. Just ain't going to happen.

He also used to pee on the counter at the vet's nearly every time we were there. This stopped when I had him neutered at the age of 3.

8 hours is a long time. What do you do with him when you get home? Do you excersize him? How often? What kind of harm does he cause in the kennel?
