Staying in his bed

I have a 6 month old with basic training. My next objective is to have him go to his bed in our den and stay there. To calm down and in future when company comes over to train to bed verus crating him. He sits-down-stay but but staying long time so so hard for 6 month old. He has toys around him. How long is it realistically to leave him on his bed. I don't want to frustrate him or me. I keep reinforcing staying and it is a struggle but I don't want to ask him to do something his age isn't ready for. I have tried 20 minutes and does it if I have him on leash and reinforced. Suggestions?

Toys can get really boring. If your pup is on the bed near you and on leash and doing well for 20 minutes, great! in a couple of weeks try for 25. Of course it will be easier if you've gone out to play first and then your pup may get bored and fall asleep. If you want your pup to be calm when company comes over, teach your company to ignore the pup. We still keep our dogs on leash when new folks come over. Once everything settles down into calm conversation we can let our dogs off leash and they go settle themselves somewhere nearby.

Of course when family comes over it is a little more rambunctious. There are squirmy hellos and whimpers and such off leash.

We put our dogs behind a baby gate or in their outdoor kennel until they and the visitors are settled.Makes for a much calmer meet and greet. Then the dogs just settle nearby like car2ner's do.
