Question introducing my gsd to cats of all ages

Im not sure if this falls under this forum, but we have a almost 10 month old, hes great with people and kids as well as all sizes of dogs though he can get pretty excited (jumping and licking etc.) for a while till he calms down a bit, we currently live in hawaii due to my husband being in the navy, and our dog hasn't been around cats, hes seen neighborhood cats outside while on a leash and just looks at them but it was from a good distance and both my parents and my husbands parents as well as my sister have a cat that vary in age. we will most likely not be around anyone who has cats until we leave hawaii which won't be till about april of 2018 and im worried that he will be to hyper, chase after the cats, or possibly attack them (we haven't seen any sort of aggression in him since having him and his previous owners haven't either) if we introduce him to them when we move back, i know its a long ways out but does anyone have advice on how to teach thor to be good with cats once we get home because we will more than likely be staying with one of them till we get our house and i don't want him attacking or upsetting the cats while we stay there. ive seen dogs being ok with cats as long as the cats are being held and then as soon as the cat runs off the dog chases after and it worries me that this will happen. ive read to introduce them slowly which i plan to but still. Note family i mentioned also have dogs so im hoping that the dogs will help distracted thor a bit from going after the cat. sorry if this is confusing. any advice?

Relax--it's a long way off.
In the meantime, just do your usual obedience training. When you get to the cats, you control, supervise and set the rules. If you don't have voice control by then, you start with a leash.

All of my other dogs were GSD's, sadly missed, moving forward
