Will I be able to train my smart pup to stay within boundaries?

Hi,
I'm wondering if I will have to confine her with fencing or if I can train her to stay within a confined area when I am not there.

Even if I do for the fencing option for safety and all those reasons, is it still possible to teach a dog said?

Thanks.

I would never take the chance of leaving my dog outside loose when I wasn't around especially without a fence. To many things can happen, training can never be 100%.

Fencing is the safest way to go. You can still teach a dog to stay with you, but again , not all dogs are going to be 100% all the time..

Ok, thanks. Makes me wonder about protection dogs - I saw one before that was having an off day and wasn't responding correctly to commands.

My husband's childhood dog was taught to stay on their property. His Dad would walk the perimeter with her everyday when they got her, and the one time she went outside she got corrected and never left the property again even with an invitation from the boys to go jogging. I'm guessing she was a fairly smart and sensitive dog though, and I don't know if it would work with everyone. They also had a good bit of land with no real neighbors or traffic nearby.

Yes, you can. But it is a huge investment to proof a dog to that degree.

More important points to consider:

You can NOT train other dogs/cats/coyotes to stay off your unfenced property.

You can NOT train a thief not to steal your dog.

You can NOT train a bully not to taunt/tease/poison your dog.

Etc., etc...you see where I'm going with this
