I need help with retrieving

I'm hoping someone may have a good idea to get Hex to bring the toy all the way back.

He will happily run to get it and bring it back but then tends to drop it about 1meter away from me. Then just stands there and looks at me in a "well I got it come on pick it up" kinda way.
I have tried backing away as he comes back toward me to try to "draw" him with me. That doesn't seem to work, neither do food treats.
Tonight I just sat down and became "boring" when he dropped it. He would start to whine and I would encourage him to "get your toy" that worked a little he would go and pick it up (I'd praise him enthusiastically) and bring it a bit closer then drop it again.
He got it right once (it was a fluke) when he actually brought it all the way to me , let me take it and then had a nice game of tug as reward.
He's fine about me picking it up once he drops it but I know he really would like me to chase after him to get the toy back (which I won't do obviously), hence he's reluctant to bring it to me. I'm hoping that by getting to play a game of tug when he brings it all the way back he will realises that he doesn't loose the game or the toy but gets to have more fun.

Is there anything else I could try?

Thank you

Have you tried using 2 balls? I need to try this as Tuke will come back about 3/4 of the way, drop it and then kick it around the yard like a soccer ball.

My puppy's doing the same thing. For some reason he's good in our yard though. I don't get it, lol. But when we're in the park and playing, if he doesn't drop it in front of me, I turn and walk away. When he drops it perfectly, I try to pick it up as fast as I possibly can and throw it. This is a work in progress, lol. I'm using a frisbee.
