Waiting - How to teach?

We have a problem developing. I didn't even give it much thought until about a week ago.

Gracie is able to go in the two main rooms of the house. Bedrooms and the kitchen are off limits. This is great because no one else spends much time in the other rooms. There is a small stairway between the two rooms. It is about three steps. Gracie frequently runs between the two rooms.

The problem is that she hurries up and down the steps with you. As I was going up today, she went between my legs. Typically, she sweeps by alongside of you. There is barely enough room for a 65lb dog and a person to use the stairs and it has become a huge hazard.

The question is...how can I get her to wait and allow me to go up or down the stairs before she does?

Have her sit. You do the flight of stairs. Then release her.

The other option would be to send her first.

have you taught her the stay command? have her stay at the top, you go down and then call her, dont forget the treat and lots of praise.
