Smile Housetraining help

I have a female GSD who was born 01/06/11. It is now April, we've had Gracie for a month and she still has days where there are quite a few accidents (urinating) in the house. Some days are great & I think she's finally getting it and some days (yesterday!) I caught her starting to squat half a dozen times.

The first part of this post is a question. Usually when she goes out, she pees 2 or 3 times. The second and/or third are usually just a couple drops. Overnight in the crate though (10-7AM) she always holds it and has a big pee when she goes out. I just don't understand why she hasn't caught on yet, I'm ready to take her to the vet to check for an infection, but she's not licking or 'bothering' with that area - is that not a given for infection?

The second part of the post is a little help for those of us house training a new dog. Try hanging a few small bells or wind chime by the door & every time you take her out, jingle the bells. after a while the dog catches on and rings the bells with her nose to go out.

For what it's worth.

not licking and such is not a given when it comes to UTI's..I'd have her checked out first, and then if she's clean, go from there..

you need to make a schedual if you dog is 4 mths old take you outside every 4 hrs 5 mths 5 hrs. after she wakes up take her outside after playing take her outside after you feed take her outside

reason that she dont go in the crate is that is her den dogs from wild to ped dont go where they sleep.

I would first rule out a UTI. Female puppies get them so easily. She will get the hang of it. You just need to be diligent about getting her on a schedule and keeping her on it. Do you praise when she potties out side (with food/toy reward)? I do remember when Yoko was a puppy and I thought she was potty trained, she would have an accident. That was me not having taken her out when she needed it. She is still very young to expect to be completely potty trained yet.

I second the bell thing, we do it and it works like a charm! I think she is a little young to be completley trained, but I would check for UTI as well. Someone asked how you react when she does potty outside...I made a darn fool out of myself doing the "good potty dance"....she loved it! A good, quick body scratch worked too for marking the good behavior.

Thanks for the advice!

Well, I did end up taking her to the vet just to make sure and she was fine. I bought some antibacterial baby wipes to clean her 'area' down there a couple times a week just to keep things clean, as the vet recommended.
We do always praise her for outside business and were very free with the treats for the first month(we've lightened up since then on the yummies!). She does seem to be getting better, I guess it's just time and getting her used to 'the ways of the domesticated dog world' thing. She's had 3 weeks of training so far at PetSmart (a friend of ours works there as a trainer) and she's sharp as a razor.
Thanks again for all the help!
