Teaching Jaia to Open a Door

I have been doing some clicker training with my dogs and having a great time.

I wanted to tie a cloth around the handle and have Jaia tug on that to open a cabinet door, but I couldn't get him interested in tugging on the cloth. I tried another tug toy and a Wubba, but he just couldn't connect it. I finally hit on the right toy. The Flying Squirrel.

I got him tugging on the squirrel, then held the cloth in the same hand so that he sometimes would get the cloth in his mouth too. Those tugs got a jackpot reward.

In our afternoon session, I stood in the same place as I had been with the squirrel, but I had just the cloth in my hand. He picked it up right away. Then I went to the cupboard with the cloth and held it down by the handle. A few tugs on that, and then I connected the cloth to the handle.

This video is of the final steps with me adding the cue. It's cut up, of course, because of some waiting and interruptions. (With 3 other dogs and a husband, it's hard to work uninterrupted.)

But we finally got it. Enjoy!
Jaia Opening the Door

I don't know if this is in the right forum...

Re: Teaching Jaia to Open a Door

That's so cute! So what will he be helping himself to in that cabinet?

We did a similar thing with Cassidy to open the door from the garage into the house. She was obsessed with tennis balls, so we got one on a rope and hung it over the doorknob. At first we'd put it in her mouth and then pull the door open, but she kept dropping the ball once we let go of it. One day while I was at work and Tom was working at home in the office she'd let herself out and next thing he knew she was standing next to him, as pleased as she could be! And then all afternoon she'd let herself out, grab the ball and fling the door open and let herself back in - over and over and over again, lol!

You know, watching Jaia in that video he reminds me even more of Dena than Keefer. His head is not feminine like hers, but it's not quite as big and blocky as Keefer's either, and the amount of black on Jaia's face is VERY similar to Dena, where Keef's face is darker. Jaia also has a sweet, gentle expression, which is very reminiscent of Dena.

That's a cute story about Cassidy.

I do see resemblances to Dena and Keef.

Re: Teaching Jaia to Open a Door

Thanks for posting that - it is on my list of things I want to teach Dante!!

It's funny though when I watch videos that have clicker training - Dante looks around like "Ok what did I do and where's my treat" when he hears the clicker

Re: Teaching Jaia to Open a Door

That is great! Are you gonna teach him to close it next? I'm afraid if I tried that here it would become a tug of war game between Boss and the cupboard and I really don't want to do a kitchen remodel yet

Re: Teaching Jaia to Open a Door

If only I could take away the ability to open doors from Rommel. We never locked our doors before but now we have to throw the dead bolts, put child proof stuff on cabinets and additional locks on the pantry. Be careful what you teach. We have to distract him while we unlock the deadbolts or he will have those figured out after two times of watching you.

Re: Teaching Jaia to Open a Door

I made sure to attach the cloth to teach him this JUST SO he wouldn't be opening it on his own. LOL

SpeedBump, we have lever handles in the doors inside the house and B'asia taught herself to open them. LOL No privacy.
