Fear/Respect for cars
Aloha, Some time ago I saw a post here about how they train a dog to respect cars for blind people. Everyone here (as well as I) was appalled when they said that they "hit" the dog with the car.
I drive a 3 wheel moped for my wheelchair running around town and Rasa was always freaking out when I started it and was whining, biting the tires, exhaust, plastic and anything she could grab. Once stopped she continued to try attack the moped until I diverted her attention. I thought over time she would get used to it, but the behavior got worse. UNTIL.....
I accidentally hit her with the front wheel when she attacked it at 20mph. It ran her leg over and she cried out and limped on 3 legs for about 1/2 hour. I consoled her and she did not equate her injury to me, just the "dangerous metal thing".
Now she has total respect for the moped and runs with enthusiasm for exercise and does not try attack it any more. (yes I know I am lucky it did not break her leg). So is there possibly any validity to bumping the dog with a car (in a controlled matter so to not break anything?) And do these trainers actually do that or is it just a rumor?
