Harness harmful?

Is it harmful to have a pup do commands while in a harness such as a Gentle Walker? I just started Lainey on it and when we had to do commands in class, she seemed reluctant to do downs. Does she just need more time in the harness or could it be hurting her somehow? Thanks. Kim

Re: Harness harmful?

Those harnesses can chafe but I haven't seen a problem when doing downs. I bet she just needs to get more comfortable in it. She probably just feels it's constricting.

It may also just be that she's nervous in class and not comfortable doing downs there just yet.

Re: Harness harmful?

If properly fitted I don't see how it can be harmful.

Re: Harness harmful?

The Gentle Walker body harness (not head collar) can put pressure on their chest as they stretch out even if fitted correctly. Teaching them in one isn't a problem unless it bothers your dog. With larger dogs with broader chests it tends to bug them. If your dog is responsive without it on I would try out a comfort wrap or Sporn. They both work just as well but are worn differently.

If a harness is left on for more than just walks and leash work it can cause chaffing, sores, and even abscesses. Always remove the harness when your done working and rub your dog down.

Rome was not built in one day, children do not learn overnight, so with the proper training consistency and patience you will have the dog you have always dreamed of. There are no UN trainable dogs only UN trainable people.
