herding instinct test results for us in Claremore OK

I posted this in the previous thread about herding classes in Oklahoma, but thought i would make my own thread about our experience at the instinct testing this weekend. So here I go again:

Going into this, I was anticipating Carly acting like a nut and trying to take out a sheep, and Sage barking her head off and running away... but.... this is how it went:

Carly qualified on both tests. Ya! That goofy girl got her herding instinct certificate.

The first test she was a little timid (not ever having laid eyes on a sheep before), but was interested. She did get head-butted, lol. Poor Carly, she looked so confused. She did okay and the judge passed her.

The second test, she couldn't wait to go in and see the sheep. She was much better and passed easily. It was so cool to see her move.

Sage qualified on the first test, but failed the second one.

She was timid as I expected. At first she seemed to think she was supposed to hang out with the sheep ("hey are you my new friends?"). But then she started barking at them ("hey you guys, DO something!") and then everyone got moving. She was a little distracted (she's somewhat of an airhead at times) but qualified.

The SECOND time, she had had considerable time to think about the whole thing, and decided taking out a sheep would be lots of fun. She got way too wound up, and at one point had a mouthful of wool which she spit out in one great big white puff. If nothing else, she is entertaining!. Anyway, she failed. The judge said don't give up on her, she just needs to learn to focus. I'll try her again.

And that was how I spent a hot day in a dusty barn in Claremore, Oklahoma.

I was just watching some herding video on my MacBook that I took at the test. I had the sound cranked up. Carly and Sage were sacked out on the couch, apparently exhausted from their dog show weekend.

Well, of course you hear lots of "baaaa baaaa baaa". Carly sat up on the couch, like she couldn't believe her ears. The more they "baaaa'd", the more she craned around trying to find them. She finally stared right at me, with this astounded look on her face.

I could see the wheels turning... "When did we get SHEEPS in the house?!". She looked pretty happy about it, lol.

You can even tell by the pictures that Carly is working and Sage is chasing.

LOL, yes! Carly never did chase. She got too close, but you could call her off.

Sage, on the other hand...!

Yay! I'm so glad you went and had a good time! Carly is obviously into it. Don't give up on Sage, he can learn the difference between chase and herd, I'd give it 3 or 4 lessons. Stosh and I went to our first herding trial two weeks ago and the first day he failed miserably! He did things I've never seen him do- first he did doughnuts around and around the sheep, then he bit one [something he's never ever done before, technically called a grip] then he decided to cool off and laid down in a puddle and drank it. Naturally we flunked big time, but the next day he did well and passed. Get ready, herding is addictive!

Congratulations Stosh!!

We watched a herding trial up in Wichita this past weekend. All border collies. Of course they did all their amazing border collie moves. It's hard to imagine at this point that either one of mine could do such a thing!
