These are pictures from the day of Gunny's super freak accident that still can't be explained and a week into recovery. We were just coming in from playing in his first snow storm. We have wooden accordion kid gates in some door ways and to block the hall. They hook onto eyebolts. He dropped his cookie and the next thing I knew was screaming and pulling back. Thought his collar was stuck. Nope. He had hooked his eyelid through the eye of the eyebolt and back out again. Can't leave him to get something to try to pry it open. So with a 6 month old puppy screaming, me praying as hard as I can, I take out my car key and try to pry the eyebolt opening bigger. Nope. Turn it pointing down, and with more prayers took the key and worked the eyelid off. This puppy once put his mouth over my arm and took it right off. We are super blessed it appears no damage to his eye. Extensive testing was done at the vets. 10 days into healing there is a little swelling still in the eye lid and I think may have some scar tissue. And the tear in the outside corner of his eye is slow to heal, and a slight discharge. We upped his antibiotic and keep putting the RX on it. Prayers to work..The first picture is at home and still groggy. The second is the evil eyebolt. The part that went through the eyelid is the flat part. Hooked in and back out like a fish hook. His eye is even better than the last picture which was about 3 days ago.
That whole thing just freaked me out! I keep looking at things around the house with much more caution now,
I am so glad he is ok! that must have been so frightening.
i don't know if all the swelling will go away. It will look different when the hair grows back as they shaved it so I could keep it cleaned and put the ointment on it. The torn part with most likely stay pink. And I don't know if the slight swelling, less than that picture, will ever go away or if it is scar tissue. He was pulling back pretty hard at first. One thing that came in handy is he loves to sit between my legs. So I was able to keep him from pulling too much and kept him still while I got it unhooked. Bubble wrap and a football helmet with visor are next
It doesn't look very long, but it was deep almost to his skull. Being 'stupid' (if you can call this GSD) little puppy, he didn't care. So before trip to the vet I have to chase bloody puppy all over the field. Vet said,it was almost exactly at the point, where stitches were necessary. But opted not to do it. And instead we are on anti-inflammatory pills and some nano-silver-particle cream. It's heeling very very very nicely.
Those poor pups. I'm so worried Xena will get into something and I'll freak out. My brother's GSD-5 months old ate 50 vit d pills. Not a good thing to happen. Glad both pups are doing good.
@dogbyte do you have a vet Ophthalmologist near you. I'm sure your regular vet is giving good care for this injury. If it were me I would be having it looked at by an eye specialist if one is near by. I would be worried that there might be future eye issues if it doesn't heal correctly or to much scar tissue develops.
Considering the severity of the injury in such a delicate area it does look much better for it only being a week into recovery. Thoughts of continued healing for Gunny.
