Coccidia and Giardia

I took my newly aquired puppy to the vet on friday.
They told me that he had Coccidia and Giardia. Their attitude had changed dramatically after they did a fecal test which made me worry a little. And it seemed like she wasn't telling me everything.

I have medication that he takes once a day, I am just curious if anyone has any history with these. And if so, what was the outcome, how long did it take before he got better.

Is there anything I should know, or any extra precautions i should take?

The breeder who I got the dogs from was horrible. The 11 puppies all lived in a little fenced in area, which needless to say, was covered in their feces. They had no prior shots. only a deworming medication at 2 weeks old.

Anyway, Im worried about the little guy, any help/info would be appriciated.

Also, What kind of diet should he be on?
Right now he is getting 1 cup of Purina Pro Plan (For Puppies)
And about 1/4 can Pedigree chicken and rice formula..

Also, I have heard that raw coconut oil is good for their immune systems (which I happen to have tons of in the house). Should I mix some in his food? Or let him lick a little off a spoon? if so, how much?

he is 8 1/2 weeks old and weighs 10lbs

These two articles from Mar Vista/VIN are really good on the treatment of these two things:
Coccidia - Mar Vista Animal Medical Center

Giardia - Mar Vista Animal Medical Center

If you have a pup that is full of parasites, I am guessing worms will also be sprouting. Ask your vet what their typical de-worming schedule is to hit all the worms as they arrive.

These things can also upset their bellies, or it seems to, so keeping them on a food they do well on will help - I like to use less ingredients for a puppy like that so something like this: Pinnacle® - Chicken & Oatmeal Recipe Premium Dry Dog Food . I will add a little (a TBS or 2) puppy canned food from Merrick Puppy Plate Canned Dog Food for Puppies | Classic Grain Free Recipes from Merrick , and I also get probiotics for sickly puppies. An expensive-r one but one that is easy to give is made by Vetriscience and they are little bone shaped chews. I give that mid-day.

I like to feed these puppies 3x a day at least and let them rest before and after they eat.

I am careful to weigh foster puppies like this weekly to make sure they are gaining and how much. More if needed. Extra worms and parasites can make puppies more susceptible to some bad GI stuff so you watch carefully for diarrhea and vomiting. But in general, once they are in a healthier environment, kept clean, dry, well fed, aren't competing for food, and are given TLC, they get healthy quickly!

We cleaned the toys and crate daily and the vet told us to wipe puppys butt after he potty so he does not keep reinfecting. giardia is a pain and took us 3 rounds of medication.

Coconut oil is a healthy, easily digestible fat, but I've never used it with a sick puppy so I don't know if it would be a good idea in this case or not. The usual dose is 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight, worked up to gradually. I scrape some out of the container with a fork and toss it into my dog's bowls and then let them lick the fork. If you do decide to give him some, I'd start VERY slowly, maybe just a 1/4 teaspoon.

Dante got Giardia when he was 4 mos. Our vet had us do 2 rounds of Panacur. 3 days on 7 days off, 3 days on. He was on a strict diet of boiled white rice and boiled chicken, with multi vitamins, and GI supplements for a month straight. We also continuously cleaned the ground after he used the bathroom. Make sure you take care because you can also get this. At the end of a month everything was normal and we switched him to a RAW diet. He has not had any issues since.
