The solution that I use is teatree oil based and is an ear cleaning solution. I seems to work best for Shadow when allergies cause flare ups. I went through a bunch of ones that didn't work.
The make up pads are the round flat pads sold everywhere. They are very cheap and also useful for wiping eyes, cleaning small ouchies and applying ointments.
