Dogs for Hospice

I saw an add today that our local Hospice is looking for people to share their pets. I thought what a great opportunity as I want to share my GSD in some way with others. I have always admired Hospice workers they are heaven sent. I have had a few friends die of terminal illness and Hospice was there and they were excellet it is not a job to them but a calling. What an awesome way to share my GSD and to give back.
Has anyone shared their GSD this way? My Max is only 5 months so I will have to work with him to calm down when people greet him but he loves people and is not shy or timid in new surroundings I think he would do great and love the people.

Re: Dogs for Hospice

Sounds like a great opportunity to help people! Hospice is awesome, they helped my Dad when he was dying of cancer! I think you probably have to get dog good citizenship training to do it- like a therapy dog!

Re: Dogs for Hospice

Hospice workers are true angels from heaven........

I don't know how they do it ! Just walking in their everyday made me very sad. I lost my brother (40 yrs. old) in 2003.

I did take our Golden Ret. in there to visit him one day. I would love to share our GS Storm with people & my goal SOMEDAY is to have him be a therphy (sp ?) dog.

Re: Dogs for Hospice

When my mother in law was in hospice the manager of the place had her little dog there and the dog just wandered in and out of the room very quietly

Belle (gone over the bridge)
Sable (my silly, loud 'large' girl)
4 Rescued cats (a rainbow of fur)
One husband who is the greatest. He takes care of my animals and gives them TLC

Re: Dogs for Hospice

I think it's a great idea that they are looking for people to come in and visit with their pets.

Did their ad state what requirements there are for pets to visit? I would think that they'd want to have a copy of the dog's shot record, and that the dog needs to be registered with a therapy dog organization so that it is covered under insurance in case something happens. If they don't require those, I would be worried about liabilities.

Lots of folks here visit old folks homes, hospices, hospitals, etc. with their dogs frequently. There's a section further down on the board for therapy dogs, too.
