In The House Activities for Our GSD's

Okay... I have been thinking about when the weather gets too hot here in Tennessee, and Cooper will not be able to enjoy the outdoors as much. I know I have read other notes about the rai,n and our dogs not being able to enjoy the outside running and playing. So, I would love to find out what other GSD owners do to entertain their dear friends when everyone is stuck in the house

I'll start with what I do with Cooper on rainy days like today and unfortunately tomorrow.

1. Training sessions two to three times during the day
2. Kong toy filled with treats
3. Upside down large metal bowl on the floor - he absolutely loves this! He pushes it across the floor, shoots it through his legs with his paws. It's entertaining for him, but loud on the ears.
4. Hide and seek with my children (when they get home for school)
5. Hide the treaty and Cooper needs to find it
6. Catching tennis balls in his mouth

If anyone else has some great ideas to share I would love to read them. Summers in Tennessee can get really hot and I know GSD's don't like the hot weather too much. New activities for Cooper would be a great welcome.

Thanks for your time.

Hi! I am from Mt. Juliet, TN! How old is Cooper and where did you get him? I'm more worried about all the rain we get here in the spring! My yard is a mess and pouring rain and thunder like we are getting right at this moment makes taking him out often on a leash (we have a fenced in yard but we are still housebreaking him) no fun!

How about getting him a swimming pool to play in outside, and/or spraying him with water from the hose.

The kiddie plastic pools are great! We have one for our hooligans in the summer! Its amusing to see 4 full grown mosnters flailing around like fishies! When we have BBQ's our guests seem to think its the funniest thing in the world!!

Hmm more indoor ideas..... Look online or books for fun "tricks" you can teach. Add these to your training excersises, or just do a 5-10 minute train on the new trick. bang, play dead, spins, bow, saying prayers etc. All easy things to learn, and its so exciting once they've gotten it.

Or, since he likes the upsidown bowl, try using 3 smaller size object and hide treats under one. Then he has to search which one has the treat, then figure out how to flip it to get to the prize!

Re: In The House Activities for Our GSD's

Oh Yeah! Another GSD owner almost in my hometown. I actually live in Spring Hill. I put Nashville, TN in my profile because I usually get the questioning look of... where is Spring Hill? So, I figured pick the big city.

Cooper is almost 10 months old. My family got him from a breeder in Wisconsin. He is a family friend, and has been breeding shepherds for a very long time. Where did you get your puppy?

I have been looking for fellow GSD owners. I cannot locate anyone near me. I walk at several different parks and I have never run into another GSD. Recently, I have been thinking about starting up a GSD club to hopefully meet up with some other owners and let the dogs' play.

Your puppy looks very young in the picture. How old is he/she? If you ever want to walk them together, please let me know. By the way, have you thought about where to train with your new little one? Cooper is in a Level 3 class at Nashville Dog Training Club. I highly recommend them.

Good luck with the potty training. Cooper learned pretty quickly.

Sherush -- thanks for the pool idea. I will have to purchase a baby pool this summer. Cooper is a water dog. My family just returned from a vacation on the beach and I think Cooper had more fun then my two children.

Take care,
Terry K.

Re: In The House Activities for Our GSD's

I love the idea of using three bowls and hide a treat under one for him to find. I will definitely have to try this one. I will have to start a list of "new tricks to teach Cooper" when we are stuck in the house.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Take care,
Terry

Camo likes to climb in the shower and get a wet wash cloth, carry it into the bedroom, stretch it out on the floor with his paws and scoot his face and body around on it...LOL! its the funniest thing to watch, the kids crack up when he does it! I need to video it sometime!

Wow! Our pup is just over 2 months old. He is still a baby! We are starting puppy class in Berry Hill at "Dogs and Kat" on this Sunday. She is just opening a doggie bakery. She is more of a behaviorist and I want her to work with my kids on their clicking skills and she does a good job with socialization. We will also be going to the "Middle TN Working Dog" club in Franklin to start working on tracking now and protection later. They meet every Saturday. I used to go the NDTC years ago with a sheltie- like early '90s! After our beginning classes we will go to NDTC- esp. if we decide to do AKC Rally and obedience instead of Schh!

Let me know if you do start up a club! You are welcome to visit the working dog club in Franklin with me... I teach some classes for TSU on Saturdays so I can't go every week. Spring Hill is quite a drive but I'm sure we could meet in the middle and walk after Radar gets the rest of his shots!

Radar is from J & M Shepherds in Lebanon, TN.

Here are my daughters with him! I also just posted some rain photos on another thread!

Re: In The House Activities for Our GSD's

This little game happened by accident this easter. I got some of the plastic eggs, they had small holes in the top, that I hid in the house for my daughter, I put jelly beans in them and some other treats. One of my shepherds loves jelly beans and went on the hunt with my daughter, he found more then she did. I then started putting little dog cookies in them and he loved looking for them through out the house. Funny how such fun can come from an accident.

Re: In The House Activities for Our GSD's

An Easter Egg hung for Cooper... what a great idea!!! He loves to play "find the treaty" around the house. I like the wet wash cloth idea too. Since he loves the water I am sure he would be shaking this all over the house. I would have to do this when my husband is not home though... he would give me that questioning look... "what are you doing now?" It's great to read everyone's ideas. Thank you for sharing.

Just as a side note... today I worked on teaching Cooper to wave. I saw a video (via this site) where someone taught their shepherd to wave. Cooper has it almost down. It takes me a couple of times to repeat the command and then he raises his paw.

TNGSD - 2 months old... how sweet! Your daughters look so happy in the picture with him. I need to learn how to upload pictures. I tried when I first signed onto this website, but failed. I guess I should take some time to learn since I have lots of pictures to share.

I would love to visit the Middle Tennessee Working Dog Club. I actually have been looking into the tracking class at NDTC, but they only gather together on Sunday mornings. This is not a good time for my family. If they have a website, please let me know the address. I know Cooper would love a tracking class. What a great way for them to lead the way and learn something new.

Good luck with your classes at Dogs and Kat.

Take care,
Terry
