Poorly Bred or Mix?

Hi everyone! I was just curious about my late dog, Mac. I got him from a rescue and he passed away suddenly of a heart complication at only six in 2018. I used to think he was pure bred, but the more I see photos of him, he looks off.

Mac acted very much like a shepherd, but had frazzled nerves. He was definitely larger than standard, closer to 30 inches at the withers and weighed in at 90+lbs. The "tan" of his black and tan was closer to white and cream. He did have double dew claws which I found to be the strangest thing! At the rescue, he was listed as pure, but he had been passed through many people's houses before arriving at ours, so there is no way to tell.

I'd love to know other opinions on this!

I think it could go either way... if someone were to tell me he was purebred, I certainly wouldn’t question it, but if you told me he had a trace amount of rottie or mastiff or malamute or swiss mountain dog - I’d believe that too! He’s handsome.

Everything about his pictures looks GSD. He looks a little over-sized. There really are only a few breeds where double dews are normal. I don't know that I ever had rear dew claws on a GSD, but I wouldn't rule him out for that reason.

Little Kelpie blood? The tallness could be from early neutering

DNA test...I'm sure you still have some hair/fur of his lying around. If you're really curious, and you can afford the fee, then get the test done.

I have groomed a GSD that had rear dew claws. He was 100% GSD, though likely from a BYB. It can happen, but is considered a fault so is more likely to pop up in BYB dogs than those from a reputable breeder.

On the rear dew claws - I know of a well-bred german import with rear dew claws.

And the dog looks PB GSD to me.
