Pick up poo? Just finished my morning ritual of dog poo clean up. Do you watch your dogs and clean up right away, do it once daily, weekly?
I have 3 monsters, so there is a never ending supply of poo. Growing up with horses, I cleaned the pasture patties up, let the horses out of their stalls, and then mucked the stalls and laid down fresh hay. It’s carried over to dogs for me as well. I clean up once a day, every day.
We did live in a small apartment complex I was working at, for a few months before I quit and moved back to AZ, and I obviously cleaned up immediately. But having a doggie door and a yard now, I don’t clean up right when they go, because I normally don’t see them go, except for Seiran because she’s still a pup.
Just curious. I know heath issues are a concern from some, but any reasons it should be done more than once a day? Mine all go in one particular spot, so it’s not dotted all over my yard. No accidentally stepping in dog poo, or worrying about the kids playing and stepping in it.
It depends. Right now I clean up immediately because my puppy has coccidia. Normally I do it at least once a day, sometimes twice. It’s good to at least watch them go, as weird as that sounds, because then you immediately know if the dog has diarrhea, which dog has it if you have multiple dogs, if the dog is even going or struggling to go, etc. I’ve had vets compliment me multiple times when I can tell them exactly what my dog’s schedule is and how it’s looking. Most people throw the dog in the yard and have no idea if the dog is having issues.
That’s a really good point! Right now it’s easy to tells who’s is who’s, because Seiran has puppy poop still and she goes out front instead of out back and I watch her, Crios has normal with it being a darkish brown, and Lyka is on vet diet food, so it makes her stools black as night.
I may have to rethink the morning routine. Not the clean up, but they way I let everyone out. Crios and Lyka go out back, while I take Seiran out front. Seiran poops a lot throughout the day, my big dogs go once in the morning, and once before bed, so it should be too hard to keep an eye on them.
Do you have a partner that does all the clean up? My DH is a wimp with stuff like that. He’s at wizz at his job (network engineer), but give him manual labor and he taps out 15 minutes in! Lol. And if it involves any kind of fluid or stools, the only thing he’s good for is laughing my behind off watching him dry heave every 2.5 seconds ?
Hmmm... I’m on poo patrol right now. My GSD is just less than 8 months old and I’m trying to get a handle on his ‘need to go’ as we’re inside and I’ve got to retrain him to potty outside. He just decided to eat so I was thinking 30 minutes and I should take him outside. Hopefully he’ll potty and I can praise. He’s sleeping now. I could wait til he wakes and then walk him.
This is the one who was allowed to potty inside for a month so I’ll not scold harshly but give him the ECCCK sound and hope we get outside and a lesson is learned.
My 2 puppies mostly do their business behind the garage so it makes it easy but I have to loop the entire backyard because they like to mix it up sometimes.
I do it every other day.. or try to. That gives it time to dry out and make it easy to pick up. I just use one of those long handled scoopers and a plastic bag and easy peasy.
Funny thing - both my dogs will go immediately when they see my doing me loop, I think its so funny they know what I am doing and are trying to get it out quickly so I can clean it up.
My backyard is small and 90% pavers and a strip of dirt on one end that my boy has happily chosen to limit his landmines to. He is raw fed so they are small and turn white and crumbly within days in the southern AZ sun anyway. We clean up weekly except when monsoons threaten then its more frequent.
I’ll pick it up if I see them go or discover a pile in the yard, but I don’t actively go searching. I live on 25 acres, most of which is densely forested mountain so probably couldn’t find most of it if I wanted to. Also my bf has a weak stomach too and will puke if he has to do anything remotely gross :eye roll: a little annoying that I get to do all the ****ty jobs. Literally.
When I had multiple dogs every day or twice a day if I had a full house. Fortunately Sabi was diligent about teaching new arrivals where the potty corner was, so other then the occasional miss clean up was a breeze.
Shadow is a very private dog, and will sometimes not go if I mess with her spot, so even camping I leave it for a couple of days and clean up while she is crated. When I had a home I cleaned her spot every few days.
If we have to do walks I need to wait for her to find a private spot because she will not go if she is in the open or there are people or vehicles near. Then she turns her back so I can't watch and will not look at me while I pick it up. She's unique.
Always the same day and when I see her at it. I covered the dog yard with cedar hog fuel to keep the grass out but diarrhea (sp?!!!!) is a 'pain in the butt' to clean it off.
Every time they go. I walk both dogs twice a day individually and pick up as they go. I have a fenced in yard for fun and play time. But they both poop twice a day on walks.
Always pick up on walks but rarely in the yard. Being fed raw is a big benefit, less poop no smell smaller poops and it turns to dust after a few days.
Nitro poops on his morning walk. I pick it up in my yard when I find it, and do a poo patrol each week before garbage collection. I once got a dirty look from my dog when I missed a 'deposit' and his frisbee landed on it. I used to use the flushable dog poop bags, until I discovered they didn't dissolve it water.
