We adopted an older shepherd mix (age 5)and it's worked out well. He is relaxed and quiet at home when I work (I freelance from home), but is always up for an outing. If I do yardwork, he lays quietly by me and watches. (Seems good for not scaring fish!) He sleeps through the night (so no need to get up at night, yay).
The only times when I have to be careful not to overdo it, are when it's really hot and humid outside. Then he starts dragging a bit. In the woods, in the shade, with water nearby, it should be fine about all the time though.
He came for a 2 hr home visit before adoption, so we were able to get a good feel for what he was like. It's been over two years now, and no surprises! (Dogs don't seem to "put on a show" so you'll adopt them :-)
