Will it be a good fit?

Hello!

I want to get a dog. Coincidentally, my coworker has a 7 weeks liter white GS pups. I thought I should ask the experts here if it will be a good fit for my lifestyle and family. So I live in a town home with a small deck, about 15x15 approx. I have kids 7 yr old and a 4yr old - I'm a single mom. For a year, my parents will also live with us and my dad is thrilled to have one too. I work Thurs-Sat and some Sun. Thurs will be the hardest day because I will be gone for 16 hours shift work but my parents will be home by 8pm. One of my coworker recommended rover.com for puppy sitting on thursdays and I thought that was necessary.

Will this kind of set up work with me/familly? This pup will have to go with us on a car ride every mon-wed when I drop off my son to school.. about 1 hour drive only. Walking him will not be a problem as I live in a very walkable area, and my property is at the end unit. Walks will be done early in the morning, lunch time and after dinner. Thanks in advance!

There are folks who live in apartments and make it work so a town house wouldn't be much different. if you have researched the breed and understand the work required you should be fine. Getting the right pup will make a huge difference, Gsds often suffer from temperament issues usually as a result of poor breeding practices. With kids in the house (& friends too) you want a rock solid dog, do your homework before looking at puppies.

The first thing that popped out to me that may be an issue is exercise requirements.

GSDs are large, active, working, breeds. They need a fair deal of exercise as adults. A leashed walk at human pace does not count as exercise. They need to sprint and maintain a trot (which as humans have to be at running speed to provide) to be happy and healthy.

do you have a place where you can allow the dog to run free and off leash? Do you jog or bike?

If not... a smaller breed (with shorter legs) that can trot at your walking pace and get several good sprint strides in your home/deck/green spaces would probably be a better fit.
