Calming signals - meaning?

Hello guys

Recently I read about calming signals here and decided to observe my dog to see how often he exhibits them. Well, it turned out he does this quite often and I'm not sure what are the triggers. Will give you few examples.
Going to bed (dog is allowed in the bedroom). He either jumps on the bed or sits next to it and starts yawning/lip licking. Same thing in the morning before I take him for the walk.
In the kitchen. Again, he sits and observes me (cooking, doing the dishes etc) and starts signaling.
Or he just randomly walks to me and start signaling. There is absolutely no threat to him, why is he stressed (if he is?)
He never signals when we meet other dogs, cats, humans or anything that in my opinion can be perceived as a threat.
I'm puzzled.

They also exhibit that behavior when happy/excited.If he also lowers his head, turns away, adverts his eyes,it would be more of a calming behavior. You have to observe total body language to really 'get' what they are communicating. It's really interesting stuff, huh?!

Yeah I was going to post a similar thread just now until I noticed this. Went downstairs 10 minutes ago and he's laying in his crate and I can tell he wants to come out but started seeing he was lip licking/yawning while I was cooking up some food for myself and wasn't sure whether he's signalling he's nervous/stressed or what.

@dogma13 Definitely interesting, really want to start reading in-depth into canine behaviour!

thank God for that, I almost started thinking my dog is stressed by me and needs calming down when exposed to my sightings..
It is extremely interesting, I'd love to read a book or watch a documentary about this doggy language.

There are some videos and books out there.I'll look around in cyberspace and try to post some links of a few. After you get a feel for it it's really interesting to watch training videos with the sound off and you can tell what the dog is feeling and how it's responding. Then watch it a second time with the sound on and discover how truly bad some of the popular trainers are.
