Getting GSD used to extra space and dog run

Hi All ,

I need some advice on this matter. We crate our GSD while we are at work. He is about to be a year old so we think it is time that he starts learning how to be behave and have access to the house.

He will have access to a room, where his crate will be and this room has a doggy door so he can outside and potty if he needs too. We put a small dog run by the doggy door so he cant go get into trouble.

My question is how do we go about it so we can transition him from his crate to having access to a small room and dog run? We are thinking of starting this weekend, so he has time to get used to it before we go to work on Monday.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get him used to being in there? Do we start small? 15 increments to see how he does? Do we leave him with any toys besides his kong?

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

Honestly, I'd start small and work up. Mental stimulation is important. A bored dog is a destructive dog.

i thought that too. How small would you start? He has his kong, what other mental stimulants do you suggest? I'm nervous to leave him with certain toys because they can be choke hazards.

I would put him in the room this weekend for maybe an hour at a time. And just kinda observe at a distant how he does, if he seems bored etc.. As long as he gets good exercise I think he should transition fine at that age but it does depend on the dog. I'm just going based on experience. My gsd has had the whole house to himself since 8 months with not much transition because he's very content with laying on the couch and he didn't chew anything that wasn't his. But my previous German Shepherd never could be trusted outside the crate while we were gone. If it were me I would watch him in the room over the weekend and as long as everything in the room was his that he could chew. Just leave him Monday and see how he does.

Better if you could give it a couple of weeks. IMO, you want to see him confined to the new area and comfortable enough to sleep soundly in it before leaving him alone in it not, just little naps. A weekend won't do it... Wonderful for putting in the outdoor access!

For a very affordable price, you could sticker a little live cam in the room your pup is in and that you can log onto and check him out when you are away.
