Building kennel

I'm looking to build a kennel for when I do get my dog. I have a small backyard so I want to set up a kennel on the side yard. The entire yard is mulch right now. I intend on pouring concrete but leaving an area for the dog to relieve himself that isn't concrete. Since it won't be a huge area, grass doesn't seem to be a good fit since it will just die anyways. Just curious as to what might be a good material to use. Dog will only be in the kennel when not home and in the house the rest of the time

Cedar chips are sold in compressed bales at Tractor Supply.Smells good and repels insects. My entire kennel is covered with cedar chips.
