Black and red + sable = ?

I have been searching for days and decided to register and ask more knowledgable GSD owners. When my husband and I decided to add a GSD to our family we knew we wanted a sable. We LOVED how they looked 'wolf like'. After months of searching for the right breeder and waiting for a litter to be born with sables, we finally got the male sable we were waiting for. After bringing him home and looking up tons of sable pics to try to guess what he will look like I got a little overwhelmed on all the info out there! His Dam is sable and his Sire is black/red saddle back. We wanted the 'true sable' look but now I'm wondering if he will automatically be a patterned sable. There is absolutely nothing wrong with patterned sables and we will of course love him either way. I apologize for my lack of knowledge, but hey, I'm trying to learn!

My take:
I don't see any sable in your pup. Black and Tan yes. Sable is a dominant trait. So if his mother is sable she must have carried the B&T gene, otherwise your puppy cold not be B&T. His father was B&T so he didn't carry the sable gene or he would have been a sable. So, if I remember my genetics correctly, your pup does not carry sable.

He looks sable to me. May end up patterned, but it's hard to tell.

Hey, I guess he does! I was confused about the dark middle section of his body. Time will tell for sure.

I agree - that pup is sable. Unfortunately they change so much, and the picture is hard to tell, but he may be a patterned sable in the end. Very cute!

Thanks! I guess I'm just more curious whether or not it's even possible for a non sable GSD to create a 'typical' sable without the 'patterned sable' look. And I know I should just wait and see because they change so so so much, but I guess I'm just impatient and wanted to see what others knew that I might not. I'll try to post a couple more pics and one of his newborn pics. Thanks everyone for your input!

He is sable, whether he develops a pattern or not will show in time. He is adorable and clearly gonna be a handsome boy either way.

Thank you so much! Your dogs are beauties. Your sable is exactly the coloring we originally were wanting! Beautiful.
