Exclamation Is Nero to small for his Cage?

Hi all,
Our recently adopted GSD seems to have no Issue with his Cage (supplied by adoption centre) but I just think it's a bit to snug. Please see pictures below and comment.
The cage size is 122cm long 72cm wide 81cm tall.
He is put to bed in his Cage at night the rest of the time his door is left open and it's up to him where he goes. Sometimes back in the cage! Nero is Nearly six years old now and I just want to make sure he is getting the best we can give! If I have posted in the wrong place I apologise as I'm new to the forum. Also thank you everyone in advance and I'm always reading the forum it is great and has answered many of my questions.

I'm sure he would appreciate more room to stretch out his neck and rear legs.If it was me I would get a larger crate

I think it's a matter of what your own dog likes. If given the choice between a 36" and a 42" crate, Carly will pick the smaller one. Maybe she likes it to be cozy.

Personally I would get him the biggest size: 48 inch long. It looks just too snug to me.

if the door can be left open and he still chooses to retreat there then he probably doesn't mind it. for me... if he's ever in there for extended amounts of time, I would get a larger one - a chiropractor might cringe looking at that arch in his neck. occasionally my boys will sleep that way but I think they should still have the option not to w/o entire changes to their position.

Does he need to be crated at all? If so I'd get a bigger crate.

He looks pretty cramped. I would definitely get him more room.

This is the setup I had for Liza when she was a pup. Largest (48") crate attached to the 8-panel (including entry door), wire "play pen" sold at PetSmart (around $70 IIRC).

Looks fine to me. When Gus was crated he had a giant wire crate. Never once saw him stretch out, instead he would squeeze into the end in bizarre positions.

I've never given a young puppy this much room in a crate. This much space often leads to puppy soiling crate area.
