Introducing new pup and other questions
We adopted a 5/6 month old intact GSD today and we have an almost 3 year old neutered pit/mastiff mix at home. The intro went ok, the sniffed eachother respectfully, pup licked at the other dogs lips etc...but when in the house and the puppy starts acting like a crazy puppy, hyper and/or whining the other dog snapped/growled at him. As if to reprimand the puppy. Which I was not ok with. So they are now fully separated. One is in their crate while the other is out.
So first question: how long do I leave them in their crate before switching to the other dog? Do I do this many times a day or Every four hours or something?
My plan of action is this: keep them separated this way until both of them are quiet and respectful in their crates. I need to work on the puppy not charging out and acting insane when I go to let him out. He's catching on quick. I don't think it will take long. Also, so that neither of them pay attention to the other dog in his crate when I go to let one out. No stares, or barking or lunging etc. Once that is going well, I plan to use one of those puppy pens to separate them, supervised, in our living room. While working on their place commands with the other dog near by and making sure they pretty much leave each other alone. Once I am comfortable with that I will try to re-introduce. Does this sound like a good plan? I want to make sure I give this the best shot possible. These dogs will never be left alone unattended. I always crate when we leave. But I eventually want peace in the house between them.
Any suggestions or advice welcome! Thank you.
