Looking for a young GSD

My sister and her husband are now ready to get a new dog (they had their 14 yr old dog euthanized a few months ago) and I think a GSD would be perfect for them so I'm helping them find one.

They have a teenage daughter with Downs Syndrome and I think a good GSD could be trained to help with her.

Their #1 concern is that she sometimes leaves the house without letting them know (according to her she IS an 'adult' now ) so having a dog that could alert them if she tried to leave would be a life saver for them.

She is also self-abusive - hits herself when she gets over-stimulated. MY hope would be that the dog would help calm her or even (big hope here) put themselves between her and her fists when she starts hitting herself. That's not something they would train the dog to do - just something I hope the dog, once bonded, would do on it's own.

They have therapy people come to the house to work with their daughter several times a week so the dog must be good with people.

My brother in law runs every day so the dog would get plenty of exercise. They also have great trainers and a wonderful doggie daycare that their previous dog went to.

They don't have a ton of money and are open to both a dog from a breeder or a rescue. I would prefer they go with a breeder because of the higher expectations we have for the dog.

They would prefer something past puppy age - maybe 8 months or older. Sex doesn't matter.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know!! Both my sister and her husband are teachers so they would have the whole summer to start off with a new dog.
