2012 Westminister Show

This year they are doing live streaming of the breed rings. Herdng is day 1 (Monday).

For those of you not familiar with showing, the Mon/Tues night shows are of the groups (winner of each breed goes to group). If you want to see the breed rings (aka gsd's) you can watch online.

I always watch to see the herding and working groups, but I also watch to admire some breeds and see if there are any new breeds this year.

I know that the AKC Shows get the *raw end* of the deal here sometimes....but I must say......I think that there are many beautiful dogs in the competition at the Westminster Dog Shows......especially some of the Terrier & Hound breeds.

I think they have downsized their entries. It is now 2000, if my memory serves me (which there is a good chance it doesn't) it use to be 2500. I've been off the show circuit for 8 or 9 years so not up on the latest and greatest.

It is still one of the few remaining bench shows left in the country, which is nice for the vistors that want to view the dogs but for the actual dogs not so much. Each dog gets the same size space. So a chihuahua has the same amount of space as a mastiff. Some of the matiff folks would do multiple entries and take only take one or two dogs and use the extra entry space for their dogs.

we watch the dog shows every year,(always want to see herding group) although the foo fee foo dogs that are blown out, beretts in hair, bows in hair, etc are the ones that always win. another poodle, afgan hound, saluki, very popular best in shows. annoying, really never see a hound win and only 1 shepherd years ago win

The only herding dog to ever win Best in Show was the GSD back in 1987 (Jimmy Moses showing Hatter, who is the winningest male GSD in AKC history).

You can see other breeds that have won here:

A friend of mine is at Westminster this week, with her Black Belgian Sheep dogs. She said crating space was assigned as one arrives, so there is no grouping by breed. So, if you wanted to find all the GSD entered, you would have to walk the entire crating area to search them out. She was also told she may have to stack her crates.

GSD BOB: The Westminster Kennel Club | 2012 Breed Results: German Shepherd Dog GCH Babheim's Captain (same dog that won the Eukanuba show last week)

They don't have the breed videos up yet, or breed winner. They do have a list of entries though (bottom right link within the link)
